There are lots of myths about braces, from the idea that they set off metal detectors to the concept that they increase your chances of being struck by lightning. Another common one is that kissing with braces means the brackets will lock with your partner’s and immediately tangle. Don’t worry – that’s also not true. With that being said, there are a few tips you should keep in mind to prevent your kiss from being remembered for all the wrong reasons. To learn what they are, read on!
#1. Brush and Floss Thoroughly Beforehand
In short, the metal brackets and wires can easily trap bacteria and other debris. Since this can increase your chances of bad breath, it’s of the utmost importance that you thoroughly clean your braces (and your teeth!) beforehand. First, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your mouth. Then, use your floss to remove food particles and plaque. Lastly, rinse with mouthwash for 30-60 seconds.
#2. Avoid Onions, Garlic, & Other Pungent Foods
If you’re grabbing a bite to eat on your date, it’s a good idea to avoid any pungent foods. Although delicious, the smell of onions, garlic, and the like can linger, even after you’ve cleaned your teeth. Instead, opt for a meal with ingredients that aren’t so polarizing. After you’re done enjoying your food, excuse yourself to the restroom to quickly complete your oral hygiene routine (a to-go dental kit is especially helpful in situations like these!).
#3. Drink Plenty of Water
Sipping on water throughout your day is a good idea for plenty of reasons. First, it will keep you hydrated which will help you remain in a good mood and help keep your mouth bacteria-free. Furthermore, it will prevent dry mouth, which can increase your chances of developing cavities and bad breath. Therefore, make sure to always keep a glass of water within arm’s reach.
#4. Apply Dental Wax, If Needed
If one of the edges of your brackets or wires is irritating your lips or the inside of your cheeks, then apply some dental wax. This will prevent you from feeling uncomfortable and potentially protect your partner’s lips from harm as well. All you need to do is wash your hands, grab a small piece of dental wax, and apply it over the sharp edge!
#5. Go Slow
When it comes time for your romantic moment, go slow. This is especially important in the early stages when you’re adjusting to the presence of your braces. The last thing you want is to forcefully bump against your partner’s teeth or cut their lip on accident. For these reasons, it’s best to be gentle and stick to closed-lip kisses at first.
When it comes time to lean in for a kiss, you don’t want to be worrying about locked braces. Fortunately, this is just another popular myth. All you need to do is keep the above tips in mind!
