If you’re considering orthodontic treatment, you might be wondering if Invisalign is a good option for you. But while many people think of Invisalign as just an alternative to braces for straightening crooked teeth, did you know that it’s also capable of sometimes addressing certain bite issues? Here’s what you need to know about Invisalign and some of the different bite issues the treatment is capable of resolving.
How Does Invisalign Work?
To understand how Invisalign can address bite issues, it’s important to understand how the treatment actually works. Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable plastic aligners that gradually shift your teeth into better alignment. Each set of aligners is custom-made to fit your teeth and is replaced every two weeks to keep the movement progressing as scheduled. Unlike traditional metal braces, Invisalign aligners are nearly Invisalign and can be removed when eating or brushing your teeth, making them a comfortable and more convenient alternative in many patients’ eyes.
What Type of Bite Issues Can Invisalign Fix?
It’s true that a large percentage of Invisalign patients are targeting crooked teeth – and quite frankly, it’s an excellent treatment option for most forms of minor malocclusion. But beyond that, the aligners can be used to resolve a few different types of bite issues, including:
- Overbites, which refer to when the upper front teeth significantly overlap the lower front teeth.
- Underbites, which occur when the lower front teeth extend past the upper front teeth – essentially the opposite of an overbite.
- Crossbites, which happen when some of the upper teeth sit inside the lower teeth, rather than outside them.
- Open bites, which are when the upper and lower teeth don’t touch when the mouth is closed.
How Do I Know If Invisalign Can Correct My Bite Issues?
The only way to know for sure if Invisalign is capable of tackling your bite issues is by visiting your orthodontist for a consultation. Keep in mind that not everyone is an excellent candidate for Invisalign – complex orthodontic issues, such as significant jaw misalignment, will likely require metal braces.
However, upon inspecting your teeth, discussing your smile goals with you, and confirming that the aligners are a viable option, your provider will come up with a custom treatment plan that’s capable of straightening your teeth and correcting your bite issues!
