Think straight teeth are a modern desire? Think again! In fact, archaeological findings point to braces being used in ancient times as well. Naturally, they’ve come quite a long way since then thanks to advancements in the field of orthodontics and modern technology. To learn all about the history of braces – from the ancient days until now – keep reading.
Back in Ancient Times…
As previously mentioned, research points to braces being used in ancient times too. Of course, they were nowhere near as comfortable, sanitary, or effective. The mummified skeletons that were found had metal pieces attached with materials like animal skin. Thank goodness for modern orthodontics, right?
The First Documentation of Braces
The first ever documentation of braces was by Aulus Cornelius Celsus in ancient Rome. At regular intervals, he would use his hands to apply pressure to his teeth. While he reported success, it’s difficult to support his findings now.
Steps Forward in the 1800s
In the 1770s, “The Surgeon Dentist” was written by Pierre Fauchard. The device he created was later expanded on by Pierre Bourdet, who was responsible for noting that wisdom teeth can be removed to prevent overcrowding.
While both of these are important, they were nothing compared to the advancements in the 1800s. At this time, inventions included the half-circle wire, the gum elastic and rubber tubing to make treatment more comfortable, and the dental dem. Plus, additions like X-rays were incorporated into orthodontic treatment, which was substantial since it prevented the teeth that were out of sight from being impacted.
1900s – Braces Become Famous
Although braces were a well-known treatment in the early 1990s, they were far from affordable. Fortunately, changes like holding the brackets in place with dental adhesive and using stainless steel instead of gold made orthodontic treatment both comfortable and cost-effective. As a result, more patients than ever before had access to this teeth-straightening solution!
“Invisible” Braces Arrive in the Late 1990s
If comfort and affordability weren’t enough, the late 1990s would offer another significant leap forward with “invisible” braces. Invisalign introduced their clear aligners in 1997, which used discreet trays instead of noticeable metal brackets and wires. This innovative orthodontic treatment didn’t come with longer treatment times, dietary restrictions, and complicated oral hygiene regimens either. So, it’s not hard to see why over 12 million patients have chosen to achieve their smile goals with Invisalign over the last two decades!
Thankfully, orthodontic treatment has come a long way since ancient times. Now, straightening your teeth is more comfortable, discreet, and affordable! So, if you want to fix overcrowding, spacing issues, or something similar, then don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with your orthodontist.
